Perhaps the best thing, or the worst thing my mother ever did for me was to take me to the Dominican Republic in December of 1992 to celebrate New Years Eve. A few years prior to 1992 my mother and I were kept very busy with a very dear family member that had a serious accident at work. For a couple of years my mother and spent our days in the hospital by his side, life was hectic, and his progress was slow. When it was apparent that he was not going to ever leave the hospital, my mother and I divided our time to be shared with him. In January of 1992 we lost this very special person, and the thought of Christmas and New Years was too much to bear. A family friend suggested that we go on vacation, as a means to break up the winter blues and to recharge our batteries. At the recommendation of our travel agent we headed for the Repbulica Dominicana, a trip that I was glad to have taken.

Since that time I have spent as much time and as much money, unfortunately, travelling to different locations. Most of the people I know will not ask me when my next vacation is, but rather where I am going. Now one might think that all of this travelling has led me around the world, it has not. My heart belongs to the dominican republic and it is there that I have returned many times.

Through my travels to the dr I have met some fabulous people, many of whom I have seen just as recently as the summer of 1999. Others, I try to keep in touch with but time does not always allow you to do the things that you wish you could. The dr to me is a warm and friendly spot, where people remember your face and are eager to greet you with a smile. Never have I ever witnessed a culture that was so passionate and so giving of that passion. At times I wish that I had the strength to leave Canada and move to the dr, so that I too could give of that passion.
